Giant Clam Release Koh Tao IDC Group helps restore the giant clam population on the reefs of the island Prachuapkhirikhan Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Center, a division of Thailand Department of Fisheries, has succeeded in hatchery seed production of the giant clams since 1993. Hundreds thousand juveniles were produced for restocking the depleted coral reefs. The "Giant Clam Garden" project was first initiated at Koh Tao in 1997 and became one of the conservation project under Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s patronage. As part of the cerebration of the Queen’s 6th Cycle Birthday Anniversary in 2004, a total of 45,872 giant clams were be released in natural reefs in Thai waters, with 5,000 released in the waters around Koh Tao on the 2nd of April. The Schedule: The team of marine biologist arrived to Koh Tao at 10:30am on the 2nd of April to the Fisheries Patrol (Rama V Rock). There was an opening ceremony shortly after at the Fisheries Patrol and the certificates of participation were handed out by the Director General of the Department of Fisheries (DOF). Many volunteers helped the marine biologist unload the 5,000 Giant Clams into the shallow water to be kept till the release. At 1 pm, DOF marine biologist briefed the group of divers for each site. The dive boats were brought around to the Fisheries Patrol to pick up the baby clams and the four DOF marine biologists on each boat to direct the release.
